Dear Sir Mr S A French
A friend of mine living in
Jersey City wants the position of deputy US
Provost Marshall [Marshal] for that district now as our
Senator is all Copperhead we have no influence
with him (and I trust he has none with the Pres't)
Mr French is as loyal a man as lives and
his appointment would give universal
satisfaction to all loyal citizens and would
gratify me exceedingly as he has suffered [unclear]
for taking decided stand in favor of the
administration. Now I want you to write
to Judge Davis and ask him to use his
influence for Mr F. appointment I know
this is asking a good deal but you know
me well enough to be assured that I would
not ask this unless I had my heart in it
so my dear friend do what you can for me
and you may as you know well you always
could command my service at any time
