Jos H. Scranton Esq.
My friend
I wrote to Mr Lane proposing the
following questions and requested [unclear] categorical answers
1 Do you from the heart abominate + condemn the Southern
movement? Answer "I do"
2 Are you in favor of putting down secession or the Rebellion
(as it is called) by the use of the power the Govt can
command? Answer "I am"
3 Would you consent to any compromise with those who
are in arms against the Federal Govt? Ans. 'No'
4 Do you pray for the success of the National Govt in its
efforts to maintain + reestablish its authority in the
states now in insurrection? Ans "I do so pray."
As to his vote - he says he did not vote for [gap] but he did vote for Col Scranton -
Now my friend wasn't I right in defending
Lane + didn't you do him an injustice in
taking up an evil [unclear] [gap] against such a man
without indubitable testimony? In writing to
him I did not mention any names but told
him that I had heard his loyalty called in
question + wished to know just where he stood.
In haste I am
Yours truly
J. D. Mitchell
