Stockbridge, Mass., July 23 1862
My Dear Brother
I did not
hear of Cornelia's illness
+ loss, till day before yesterday
at Lenox when I sent to
take Fanny to stay a day
or two with her Mother.
I am glad to know that
she is now better + able to
sit up a little, + sincerely
hope that she will soon
be better than for a long
time before. give my best [unclear]
love to the dear Sister + tell
her she must take good
care of herself, + not try
to get well to fast.
We found Mrs Walker [unclear]
very well + bright as a button
She is expecting Sarah in August, + I hope by
that time Nellie will be
well enoughh to come on
+ meet here [gap] - It seems
a long time since we have
met - Come + bring as many
of the children as possible.
Fanny is pretty well
this summer - Frank Rockwell
is living with us + attending
Mr Rud's [unclear] school - Fannie [unclear]
Walker went to Pittsfield
on Monday to stay a few
weeks. She expects to return
with Sarah you know -
We have good accounts
from our Children in Geneva [unclear],
they may possible return
this fall though I hope
not till spring -
Do you find any difficulty
in making up your quota under the new Call for
300,000? We have had
one or two meetings + offer
$125 for each volunteer in
addition to the State bounty
but the enlisting goes rather
slow - I am glad to see
the Presidents new order
this morning -
