My Dear Brother-
Your letter
with the check for $500 was
recd. [received] for which I am greatly
obliged- I am very busy.
but getting more accustomed
to my duties- If the Country
was at peace. + my home
was not broken up I should
feel like another man
Sarah writes that Nell's
visit was a dear one to her,
and that she loves her
better than ever. + besides
that she knows you are
a loveable man, from
what Nell says of you-
I want to see my wife
so badly that [gap] seem to
me that I can stay here the balance of the winter without her-
I went with Mr. Dodge
to the Presidents'+ got
admission + he had
all the interview with
him that he desired-
The Presdt [president] said he [had
at] wd [would] take the matter
into consideration, and
wd [would] decide hereafter
Mr. Dodge is yr [your] warm
friend. + thinks few men
in the country have more
executive talent than
[he] you possess[es]-
The city is in excitement
about the terrible Three
days battle. At Murfeesboro
Tennessee-
The wires are
down + we cant learn
the result-
Illinois has suffered terribly-
What tribulation
we are going through
Love to your dear
wife + childern
In haste
